Tanabata is a festival in Japan that is known as the “Star Festival.”
It is rooted in an ancient children’s story about star-crossed lovers in the sky separated by the Milky Way. The lovers’ wish to come together is only granted once a year on July 7. Also known as the “Day of Wishes,” children and adults celebrate Tanabata by writing their wishes on colorful strips of paper and hanging them from trees and bamboo branches. Learn more about Tanabata and write wishes as a traditional Japanese haiku poem. Appropriate for ages 7 to 12. Space is limited; registration required.
